Simon And Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits

Released 14 June 1972 (US release)
CBS LP 69003 (UK)

1. Mrs. Robinson 8. Homeward Bound
2. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her 9. Bridge Over Troubled Water
3. The Boxer 10. America
4. The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) 11. Kathy's Song
5. The Sounds Of Silence 12. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
6. I Am A Rock 13. Bookends
7. Scarborough Fair/Canticle 14. Cecilia

The first compilation of Simon & Garfunkel "hits" from several albums to be released is still arguably the best single disc one can buy of their music. I believe that it has sold more than any other Simon & Garfunkel album. It reached #5 in the US when it first appeared in 1972. Almost all of these are the studio tracks, save for "For Emily," "Feelin' Groovy," and "Kathy's Song," which are miscellaneous concert recordings. After the recording of "Bye, Bye Love" from Bridge Over Troubled Water, they were the first live tracks to ever officially be released by the duo. My copy shown above is a British pressing. The smooth, lighter orange labels were introduced on UK CBS records in 1967.

There Goes Rhymin’ Simon

Paul Simon
US LP
First released May 1973
Columbia LP KC 32280; QUADLP CQ 32280; Warner Bros CD 9 25589-2

1. Kodachrome

6. American Tune

2. Tenderness 7. Was A Sunny Day
3. Take Me To The Mardi Gras 8. Learn How To Fall
4. Something So Right 9. St. Judy's Comet
5. One Man's Ceiling Is Another Man's Floor 10. Loves Me Like A Rock

Simon's second solo album after the breakup, this release offers slightly less material than Paul Simon, but the tracks are arguably (at least in my opinion) better overall. This album produced two #2 hits, the kickoff and final tracks, and "American Tune" also charted, although the single version of the latter is a slightly different cut than appears on the album—there is an organ that you can hear prominently at the beginning of the single cut that's not here.

Simply Simon

Paul Simon
US LP
Recorded 1973
HH Simon

Side 1:
1. Run That Body Down
2. Was A Sunny Day
3. Cecilia
4. Urubamba Introduction
5. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
6. Urubamba's Instruments

8. Death In Santa Cruz

Side 2:
1. Mrs. Robinson
2.Congratulations
3. Kodachrome
4. Homeward Bound
5. Jessy Dixon Introduction
6. Mother and Child Reunion
7. The Sounds Of Silence

This LP is a recording of Paul Simon's concert at Santa Monica, CA, Civic Center from his tour in 1973-4. It's an audience recording, but the sound quality is actually fairly good for most of the LP. The set list is somewhat similar to Live Rhymin, but there are a few cuts you don't see from that album, including live versions of "Congratulations" and "Mrs. Robinson." Running time is total about 52 minutes.

4. "The Present" 4. Mother And Child Reunion
5. Homeward Bound 5. The Sound Of Silence

12. Kapchapari
13. Scarborough Fair
14. The Boxer

Another live recording from Paul Simon's 1973-4 tour, this time from Japan. This is a 2-disc set, which is much like an extended version of Simply Simon. It has a lot of good cuts, including "I Am A Rock," "Cecilia," and "Bye Bye Love." The sound is a notch below Simply Simon (perhaps this audience member wasn't sitting quite as close to the stage?), but overall, it's a nice set for tracking down.

Live Rhymin'

Paul Simon
US LP
Released 1974
Columbia LP PC 32855

1. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
2. Homeward Bound
3. American Tune
4. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
5. Duncan
6. The Boxer
7. Mother And Child Reunion
8. The Sound of Silence
9. Jesus Is The Answer
10. Bridge Over Troubled Water
11. Loves Me Like A Rock
12. America

Paul Simon's officially-released live album from his 1973-4 tour. This LP contains some decent versions of these cuts, although there are better versions of these on other albums, both live and studio ones.

Breakaway

Art Garfunkel
Released 1975
US LP
Columbia LP PC-33700

1. I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)
2. Rag Doll
3. Break Away
4. Disney Girls
5. Waters Of March
6. My Little Town
7. I Only Have Eyes For You
8. Lookin' For The Right One
9. 99 Miles From L.A.
10. The Same Old Tears On A New Background

Garfunkel's second solo album garned more critical acclaim, much like Angel Clare two years before. Particularly notable is "My Little Town," which is performed by Simon & Garfunkel and was featured on both this album and Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years, released the same year. "Break Away," "99 Miles From L.A.," and the kickoff track are the best of the other recordings here.

Greatest Hits, Etc.

Paul Simon
Released December 1977
Columbia LP JC 35032; CD CK 35032

1. Slip Slidin' Away
2. Stranded In A Limousine
3. Still Crazy After All These Years
4. Have A Good Time
5. Duncan
6. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
7. Something So Right

8. Kodachrome
9. I Do It For Your Love
10. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
11. American Tune
12. Mother And Child Reunion
13. Loves Me Like A Rock
14. Take Me To The Mardi Gras

Simon hadn't written much since Still Crazy After All These Years came out in 1975, having been occupied with the music for the film Shampoo, a project that didn't amount to much. The first two tracks are actually the only real new material featured here. Nonetheless, for a collection of Simon's work from the 1970s as well as a nice otherwise-unavailable recording of "American Tune" that features a string quartet, this disc is difficult to beat. The recording of "Duncan" has been taken from Live Rhymin'. The one downside about it is that it is out of print and occasionally not easy to find. Columbia stopped pressing the CD after a very short period of release in the mid-1980s when Simon's Negotiations And Love Songs 1971-1986 came out. That disc was designed to supercede this one, but actually doesn't include all the material found here.

Watermark

Art Garfunkel
Released 1978
US LP
Columbia LP JC 34975

1. Crying In My Sleep
2. Marionette
3. Shine On Me
4. Watermark
5. Saturday Suit
6. All My Love's Laughter
7. (What A) Wonderful World
8. Mr. Shuck 'N' Jive
9. Paper Chase
10. She Moved Through The Fair
11. Someone Else
12. Wooden Planes

Garfunkel's third solo album, this was perhaps the last one to date that has garnered generally favorable reviews which is not primarily made up of material written by Paul Simon, although "(What A) Wonderful World" is actually a trio sung by Garfunkel, Simon and James Taylor. That single is probably the best cut on this album, which is probably why it was the only one singled out on this copy to be used by the radio deejay. This copy is a white-label promotional copy issued to radio stations which, in spite of the writing on the cover and label, is in otherwise very nice shape, even the kickoff track to side 2. Clearly, the vinyl wasn't used much.

One-Trick Pony

Paul Simon
Released 1980
Warner Bros. LP HS 3472

1. Late In The Evening
2. That's Why God Made The Movies
3. One-Trick Pony
4. How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns
5. Oh, Marion
6. Ace In The Hole
7. Nobody
8. Jonah
9. God Bless The Absentee
10. Long, Long Day
11. Soft Parachutes

Paul Simon jumped from Columbia to Warner Bros. when the latter permitted him to do his own film of the same name as this album. The last track, also Simon's own composition and from the soundtrack of the movie, was included with a recent re-release of this album. I'm a little sorry to say that I haven't seen the film, but that's also in part due to the fact that it didn't receive critical acclaim. The music, however, is decent. "Late In The Evening," "Ace In The Hole," and the title track are all A-list material from Simon's solo career.

Listen To The Silence

Recorded 22 August 1983, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

3. My Little Town
4. Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard
5. Scarborough Fair
6. Cars Are Cars
7. I Only Have Eyes For You
8. Homeward Bound
9. Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover
10. Late In The Evening
11. The Late Great Johnny Ace
12. El Condor Pasa
13. Think Too Much
14. Still Crazy After All These Years
15. Kodachrome
16. Bridge Over Troubled Water
17. The Boxer
18. Slip Slidin' Away
19. The 59th Street Bridge Song
20. Old Friends/Bookends
21. Wake Up Little Suzie
22. One Summer Night
23. Group Introductions
24. Late In the Evening
25. The Sounds of Silence

This is a live recording from Simon & Garfunkel's reunion tour in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It's a nice set, and though it's similar to The Concert In Central Park set, it's got a few extras that are nice in a live setting, including "My Little Town," "Cecilia," and "El Condor Pasa."

     [ABC-Paramount 10363-A]
26. Looking At You [Ember 1094-B]
27. I'm Lonesome [Ember 1094-A]

A pretty worthwhile disc for tracking down. This has almost all of the most well-known tracks recorded by Simon and/or Garfunkel during their early careers. I'd highly recommend this to collectors who want a nice selection of Simon & Garfunkel recordings done under various pseudonyms. This is even better than Before The Fame or Two Can Dream Alone, in my opinion.

  22. Going To The Zoo
  23. He Was My Brother
  24. Homeward Bound
  25. Bye Bye Love

All of disc 1 and the first 5 tracks of disc 2 are from a concert given by Simon & Garfunkel as part of a short reunion tour in Osaka, Japan, on 7 May 1982. On disc 2, tracks 6-11 are from a BBC promotional radio show in 1965 done by Simon & Garfunkel upon the release of the UK-only EP Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.; tracks 12-23 are from a rehearsal for a show done by Paul Simon solo at Queens College, London, in 1964. The last two tracks on disc 2 are Saturday Night Live performances from 18 November 1976. This is a somewhat difficult disc to locate, but the recordings are worth tracking down. Rudy Riet has a nice summary of the material and review of the recording on his excellent page, Song For The Asking: A Tribute To Simon & Garfunkel.

Across America

Art Garfunkel
Recorded live at Ellis Island, NY, NY, USA, 12 and 13 April 1996
US CD
Hybrid HY 20001-2

1. A Heart In New York
2. Crying In The Rain
3. Scarborough Fair
4. A Poem On The Underground Wall
5. Homeward Bound
6. All I Know
7. Bright Eyes
8. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
9. Bridge Over Troubled Water
10. Mrs. Robinson
11. The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)
12. I Will
13. April Come She Will
14. The Sound Of Silence
15. Grateful
16. Goodnight, My Love

Garfunkel's concert from Ellis Island in 1996 is worth picking up; even if you only like the Paul Simon compositions, he does a good job covering them solo here. James Taylor appears for a duet on the second track, and oddly, Garfunkel brings his son on stage with him for "Feelin' Groovy"...some people might think it's cute, but you can judge how you like the recording. Otherwise, "A Heart In New York" and "Bright Eyes" head the list of Garfunkel solo material here.

Best Live Collection 1966-1993

Simon & Garfunkel
Recorded 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1993; released circa 1999

2. Wednesday Morning, 3 A. M. (2:53)
3. I Am A Rock (2:52)
4. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her (2:27)
5. Mrs. Robinson (2:56)
6. Homeward Bound (2:31)
7. Fakin' It (3:11)
8. Old Friends/Bookends (3:11)
9. The Boxer (4:32)
10. Bridge Over Troubled Water (5:05)
11. Leaves That Are Green (2:51)
12. So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright (3:06)
13. Bye Bye Love (3:32)
14. America (3:32)
15. Scarborough Fair (3:41)
16. The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) (2:21)
17. The Sound Of Silence (6:33)

This set is a collection of recordings off of several other live discs that appeared on the market over the previous decade. The first four tracks are from Sounds Of Silence Live (1966); tracks 5-8 are from Voices Of Intelligent Dissent (1968); 9-10 are from A Time Of Innocence (1969); 11-13 are from New Yorker In Netherlands' live concert of Simon & Garfunkel in May 1970. I am not sure of the origin of the last four tracks, but I believe that they may have been released on other recordings of Simon & Garfunkel from 1993 (the disc notes that they are U.S. concerts from that year). It's not a bad disc, although if you have the individual sets from which these are taken, there's not much reason to track this one down.

Live In Philadelphia 1980

Paul Simon
Recorded 7 October 1980; released 2000
US CD
Show Co. SCPS-080

1. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
2. Still Crazy After All These Years
3. Ace In The Hole
4. Something So Right
5. One-Trick Pony
6. Jonah
7. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
8. Late In The Evening
9. American Tune
10. The Boxer
11. The Sound Of Silence
12. Long Long Day
13. Loves Me Like A Rock

A nice full recording of Paul Simon's show at the Art Deco-style Tower Theater at 69th Street in Upper Darby, PA, literally just across the county line from Philadelphia. Paul also did the last US concert from his late 2006 tour here, which also proved to be a fine performance. The full concert can also be found on laserdisc (though, of course, you'll need to find a laserdisc player to actually see this), and there may in fact be a copy on DVD floating around somewhere. This CD, however, is definitely worthwhile to hunt down. Simon has some especially fine renditions of "The Boxer" and "Ace In The Hole," the latter of course done with Richard Tee. I'd argue that the recording of "One-Trick Pony" heard here is even better than the live one included on the soundtrack/album released the same year. The last two tracks are actually TV recordings. "Loves Me Like A Rock" actually comes from an episode of Jim Henson's Muppets, with Simon being introduced by Kermit the Frog. The Muppets do all the backing vocals, and the recording includes an interesting, slightly alternate coda.

14. (Pretty Baby) Don't Say Goodbye
     [Big 618/Hunt 319-B]
15. Our Song [Big 616-A]

These were singles originally released by Simon & Garfunkel as Tom & Jerry, Jerry Landis, or Artie Garr in the 1950s and early 1960s. A few were perhaps not actually released, but are studio demos by Simon ("Flame,"? "I Love You (Oh Yes I Do)"). The ones known to have been actually released were done so on the respective labels noted in brackets besides them.
