About this page:

Simon & Garfunkel split in 1970, after their partnership had assured each of musical fame and monetary fortune. For the next decade, each embarked upon a relatively successful solo career. Simon experimented with different musical genres: reggae, jazz, gospel, and South American influences, while Garfunkel managed to carve out a niche by performing songs written by people other than Simon.

Simon And Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits
US and UK LP / 14 June 1972 (US release)
        CBS 69003 (UK)

1. Mrs. Robinson
2. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her
3. The Boxer
4. The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)
5. The Sounds Of Silence
6. I Am A Rock
7. Scarborough Fair/Canticle
8. Homeward Bound
9. Bridge Over Troubled Water
10. America
11. Kathy's
12. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
13. Bookends
14. Cecilia

The first compilation of Simon & Garfunkel "hits" from several albums to be released is still arguably the best single disc one can buy of their music. I believe that it has sold more than any other Simon & Garfunkel album. It reached #5 in the US when it first appeared in 1972. Almost all of these are the studio tracks, save for "For Emily," "Feelin' Groovy," and "Kathy's Song," which are miscellaneous concert recordings. After the recording of "Bye, Bye Love" from Bridge Over Troubled Water, they were the first live tracks to ever officially be released by the duo. My copy shown above is a British pressing. The smooth, lighter orange labels were introduced on UK CBS records in 1967.

There Goes Rhymin' Simon / Paul Simon
        US LP / May 1973
Columbia LP KC 32280; QUADLP CQ 32280; Warner Bros CD 9 25589-2

1. Kodachrome
2. Tenderness
3. Take Me To The Mardi Gras
4. Something So Right
5. One Man's Ceiling Is Another Man's Floor
6. American Tune
7. Was A Sunny Day
8. Learn How To Fall
9. St. Judy's Comet
10. Loves Me Like A Rock

Simon's second solo album after the breakup, this release offers slightly less material than Paul Simon, but the tracks are arguably (at least in my opinion) better overall. This album produced two #2 hits, the kickoff and final tracks, and "American Tune" also charted, although the single version of the latter is a slightly different cut than appears on the album—there is an organ that you can hear prominently at the beginning of the single cut that's not here.

Simply Simon / Paul Simon
        US LP / Recorded 1973
        HH Simon

Side 1:
1. Run That Body Down
2. Was A Sunny Day
3. Cecilia
4. Urubamba Introduction
5. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
6. Urubamba's Instruments

8. Death In Santa Cruz

Side 2:
1. Mrs. Robinson
2.Congratulations
3. Kodachrome

5. Jessy Dixon Introduction
6. Mother and Child Reunion
7. The Sounds Of Silence

This LP is a recording of Paul Simon's concert at the Santa Monica, CA, Civic Center from his tour in 1973. It's an audience recording, but the sound quality is actually fairly good for most of the LP. The set list is somewhat similar to Live Rhymin, but there are a few cuts you don't see from that album, including live versions of "Congratulations" and "Mrs. Robinson." Running time is total about 52 minutes.

Live In Osaka 1974 / Paul Simon
        US CD / released post-2000
        Recorded 1974, Osaka, Japan

Another live recording from Paul Simon's 1973-4 tour, this time from Japan. This is a 2-disc set, which is much like an extended version of Simply Simon. It has a lot of good cuts, including "I Am A Rock," "Cecilia," and "Bye Bye Love." The sound is a notch below Simply Simon (perhaps this audience member wasn't sitting quite as close to the stage?), but overall, it's a nice set for tracking down.

Disc 1:
1. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
2. Was A Sunny Day
3. Cecilia
4. "The Present"
5. Homeward Bound
6. American Tune
7. "Urubamba Introduction"
8. El Condor Pasa
9. Duncan
10. "Urubamba's Instruments"
11. Death In Santa Cruz
12. Kacharpari
13. Scarborough Fair
14. The Boxer

Disc 2:
1. Mrs. Robinson
2. I Am A Rock
3. The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)
4. Mother And Child Reunion
5. The Sound Of Silence
6. What Do They Call Him
7. Jesus Is The Answer
8. Bridge Over Troubled Water
9. Loves Me Like A Rock
10. Bye, Bye Love
11. America

Live Rhymin' / Paul Simon
        US LP / 1974
        Columbia LP PC 32855

1. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
2. Homeward Bound
3. American Tune
4. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
5. Duncan
6. The Boxer
7. Mother And Child Reunion
8. The Sound of Silence
9. Jesus Is The Answer
10. Bridge Over Troubled Water
11. Loves Me Like A Rock
12. America

Paul Simon's officially-released live album from his 1973-4 tour. This LP contains some decent versions of these cuts, although there are better versions of these on other albums, both live and studio ones.

Breakaway / Art Garfunkel
        US LP / 1975
         Columbia LP PC 33700

1. I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)
2. Rag Doll
3. Break Away
4. Disney Girls
5. Waters Of March
6. My Little Town
7. I Only Have Eyes For You
8. Lookin' For The Right One
9. 99 Miles From L.A.
10. The Same Old Tears On A New Background

Garfunkel's second solo album garned more critical acclaim, much like Angel Clare two years before. Particularly notable is "My Little Town," which is performed by Simon & Garfunkel and was featured on both this album and Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years, released the same year. "Break Away," "99 Miles From L.A.," and the kickoff track are the best of the other recordings here.

Greatest Hits, Etc. / Paul Simon
        US LP / December 1977
        Columbia LP PC 32855

1. Slip Slidin' Away
2. Stranded In A Limousine
3. Still Crazy After All These Years
4. Have A Good Time
5. Duncan
6. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
7. Something So Right
8. Kodachrome
9. I Do It For Your Love
10. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
11. American Tune
12. Mother And Child Reunion
13. Loves Me Like A Rock
14. Take Me To The Mardi Gras

Simon hadn't written much since Still Crazy After All These Years came out in 1975, having been occupied with the music for the film Shampoo, a project that didn't amount to much. The first two tracks are actually the only real new material featured here. Nonetheless, for a collection of Simon's work from the 1970s as well as a nice otherwise-unavailable live recording of "American Tune" that features a string quartet, this disc is difficult to beat. The recording of "Duncan" has been taken from Live Rhymin'. The one downside about it is that it is out of print and occasionally not easy to find, especially in digital format. Columbia stopped pressing the CD after a very short period of release in the mid-1980s once Simon's Negotiations And Love Songs 1971-1986 came out. That disc was designed to supercede this one, but actually doesn't include all the material found here.

Watermark / Art Garfunkel
        US LP / 1978
        Columbia LP JC 34975

1. Crying In My Sleep
2. Marionette
3. Shine On Me
4. Watermark
5. Saturday Suit
6. All My Love's Laughter
7. (What A) Wonderful World
8. Mr. Shuck 'N' Jive
9. Paper Chase
10. She Moved Through The Fair
11. Someone Else
12. Wooden Planes

Garfunkel's third solo album, this was perhaps the last one to date that has garnered generally favorable reviews which is not primarily made up of material written by Paul Simon, although "(What A) Wonderful World" is a trio sung by Garfunkel, Simon and James Taylor. That single is arguably the best cut on this album, which is probably why it was the only one singled out on this copy to be used by the radio deejay. This copy is a white-label promotional pressing issued to radio stations which, in spite of the writing on the cover and label, is in otherwise very nice shape, even the kickoff track to side 2. Clearly, the vinyl wasn't used much.

Paul Simon Plus / Paul Simon
        US LP / circa 1978
        MCP Records MCP-8027
Additional tracks by Neil Sedaka, Tony Orlando, Johnny Rivers, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

1. Play Me A Sad Song (Paul Simon)
2. It Means A Lot To Them (Simon)
3. Flame (Simon)
4. While I Dream (Neil Sedaka)
5. Ring A Rock (Sedaka)
6. Ding Dong (Tony Orlando)
7. You're The One (Johnny Rivers)
8. A Hole In The Ground (Rivers)
9. Comme Si Bella (Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons)
10. This Is Real (Valli & The Four Seasons)

This LP consists of three early Paul Simon tracks along with some by various other artists, hence the name. It's interesting because someone has basically taken the Simon tracks from his days in the early 1960s and decided to overdub the tracks with a little bit of electric instrumentation, perhaps passing them off as material "recently-recorded," that being sometime in the late 1970s. This isn't a really difficult record to obtain, and is worth finding a copy, if only for the strange mixes of the Paul Simon tracks. This may in fact be the earliest release of "Flame," which otherwise seems to have been merely a demo recorded about 1963 but never before made publicly available.

One-Trick Pony / Paul Simon
        US LP / 1980
         Warner Bros. LP HS 3472

1. Late In The Evening
2. That's Why God Made The Movies
3. One-Trick Pony
4. How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns
5. Oh, Marion
6. Ace In The Hole
7. Nobody
8. Jonah
9. God Bless The Absentee
10. Long, Long Day
11. Soft Parachutes

Paul Simon jumped from Columbia to Warner Bros. when the latter permitted him to do his own film of the same name as this album. The last track, also Simon's own composition and from the soundtrack of the movie, was included with a recent re-release of this album. I'm a little sorry to say that I haven't seen the film, but that's also in part due to the fact that it didn't receive critical acclaim. The music, however, is decent. "Late In The Evening," "Ace In The Hole," and the title track are all A-list material from Simon's solo career.

Live In Philadelphia 1980 / Paul Simon
        US CD / 2000
        Show Co. SCPS-080
Recorded live 7 October 1980, Upper Darby, PA

1. Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
2. Still Crazy After All These Years
3. Ace In The Hole
4. Something So Right
5. One-Trick Pony
6. Jonah
7. 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
8. Late In The Evening
9. American Tune
10. The Boxer
11. The Sound Of Silence
12. Long Long Day
13. Loves Me Like A Rock

A complete recording of Paul Simon's show at the Art Deco-style Tower Theater at 69th Street in Upper Darby, PA, literally just across the county line from Philadelphia. Paul also did the last US concert from his late 2006 tour here, which likewise proved to be a fine performance. The full concert can also be found on laserdisc (though, of course, you'll need to find a laserdisc player to actually see this), and there may in fact be a copy on DVD floating around somewhere. This CD, however, is definitely worthwhile to hunt down. Simon has some especially fine renditions of "The Boxer" and "Ace In The Hole," the latter of course done with Richard Tee. I'd argue that the recording of "One-Trick Pony" heard here is even better than the live one included on the soundtrack/album released the same year. The last two tracks are actually TV recordings. "Loves Me Like A Rock" comes from an episode of Jim Henson's Muppets, with Simon being introduced by Kermit the Frog. The Muppets do all the backing vocals, and the recording includes an interesting, slightly alternate coda.
