Lighthouses of New Jersey
In keeping with the fun that always comes when you
go climbing on architecture, during their spare time Peter and Christina like
to visit lighthouses. On this page, the previous page, and the next page are photos we took of the
places that we've visited. ALL PHOTOS ON THIS SITE ARE COPYRIGHTED. IF YOU WOULD LIKE PERMISSION TO
USE THEM ANYWHERE,
YOU MUST CONTACT ME.

Absecon Lighthouse, Atlantic City (1857) – visited August
2006

Interior shots of the stairwell.
It's actually lit by bands of lights running under the steps.

At left is a shot of the second-order Fresnel lens, still in
use. The lighthouse is painted white with a wide gray band for use as a
daymark. Previously it employed color schemes such as orange-and-black and
red-and-white. The landscape around the lighthouse has also changed
dramatically multiple times since its construction.

Some shots of Atlantic City and the lighthouse itself from
the caged gallery, just below the lantern room (left), and from the stairwell.

Shots of the lighthouse from the gallery level.

Here you can see, at left, the thick walls that the
lighthouse has near the base, made of brick. The openings for the windows, as
you can see, are made with arched barrel vaults to reinforce them structurally.
And from the top of the lighthouse, you can see its shadow.

Like all other Fresnel lenses, the one at Absecon
lighthouse was made in Paris, by L. Sautter and Compagnie, in 1854.

The top of the stairwell at the gallery level (left), and
the bottom of the stairwell at the entry to the light tower from the former
keeper's residence (right).
