Peter and Christina's Lighthouse Photos

In keeping with the fun that always comes when you go climbing on architecture, during their spare time Peter and Christina like to visit lighthouses. On this page and the following page (and the page after that) are photos we took of the places that we've visited. ALL PHOTOS ON THIS SITE ARE COPYRIGHTED. IF YOU WOULD LIKE PERMISSION TO USE THEM ANYWHERE, YOU MUST CONTACT ME.

Point Reyes Lighthouse (1870) – visited 15 August 2005

Approach to the lighthouse at Point Reyes is down a long, long stairway.

The Point Reyes lighthouse uses a huge first-order Fresnel lens, needed to cast a powerful light to keep ships away from the foggy cliffs.

Below you can see the plate displaying the manufacturer (Barbier & Fenestre) and date (1867) that the lens was made.

         LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.01

Point Reyes is one of the foggiest places in the continental United States, with over 300 days a year forecasted for foggy conditions. Below Christina on the left is the fog signal building at the station.

The photo at the left is a close-up of the working mechanisms of the huge Fresnel lens, while the right photo shows the stairs from the lower gallery level to the lantern room.

A close up of the squat 25-foot light tower and general views of the light station.
